Hello, I'm Gillian Triggs, the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission.
We're currently conducting a national Inquiry into the over 1,000 children who are currently
in immigration detention in Australia.
As part of this Inquiry we want to hear from as many people as possible. We want to hear
about what it's like for children in immigration detention.
And how being in immigration detention effects children.
Very importantly, we want to hear from children - children who have been in immigration detention,
or who might be in detention now. Or even from those people who might be adults today
but can tell us about their past experiences when they were children in immigration detention.
We also want to hear from the parents and the guardians and the teachers and support
workers of children who have been or are currently in detention.
I can assure you we will treat your stories and the information that you share with us
with the utmost confidence and sympathy. If you prefer not to be identified, we can treat
your information as anonymous. You can share your stories with us in a number of ways.
You can write to us, email us, phone, or send us a voice or vision recording, even on your
mobile phone. We also have a submission form and you can fill out if that suits you better.
And if you don't want to tell your story in English, we can receive it in your language
and then we'll have it translated.
You can submit your story at humanrights.gov.au, email us at ChildrenDetention@humanrights.gov.au
or phone us on 02 9284 9719 or mail a written or recorded story or submission to us at Australian
Human Rights Commission, GPO Box 5218 Sydney NSW 2001.
We know that these stories will really help us to understand the position of children
in detention - they are vital to our Inquiry.
We really hope to hear from you soon.
