That's why I signed the Executive Order in 2006
directing us, as a State, to take steps to make the State a model employer
of workers with disabilities.
The Executive Order called for a survey to be conducted
concerning disability in our workforce.
The survey compiled some of the ways that the State can, as an employer,
be successful in hiring people with disabilities,
and also in places where we can improve.
Over 3,000 employees responded to the survey.
We found that 10% of the employees surveyed - indicated that they had had a disability.
We also learned more about how valuable and loyal these workers are.
Fifty six percent of our employees with disabilities
worked for 11 years or more for the State.
Overall, 78% have worked six years or greater for the State.
