JASON GLASBY: My name is Jason Glasby. I look after all of the IT technology at Brickworks.
Brickworks is one of Australia’s largest building products manufacturers. We’re national
across 70 odd sites, 1300 odd staff – out of that about a thousand odd users use some
form of technology. When I started with the company we had a number of different providers
providing all parts of our telecommunications. Given our size, I wanted something simple.
EFFIE TSIAKOS: Brickworks has been a Telstra customer for a number of years, but in the
last 18 to 24 months they became a whole-of-business customer and we also introduced the UC Telephony
Platform – namely TIPT – into their environment. JASON: Prior to moving to TIPT we had a number
of challenges within the IT department to resolve our phone systems whenever there was
an issue. Resolving issues always took a long time mainly because of trying to identify
who was responsible for that PABX system and what technology it was.
EFFIE: Because it’s a hosted platform, Telstra normally is aware of any issue that may arise
prior to the customer being aware of it. We can actually resolve the problem for them
or alternatively, people like Jason within the business will have administrative access
to the portal and he can make certain changes within the platform as well.
JASON: If a site goes down we can log into the portal, the Telstra portal, and we can
redirect the phone lines to one of the nearby sales centres, which means that our customers
are being serviced immediately. We’ve been acquiring a lot of businesses in the last
seven years. We get very short notice. We have to set up a site and have it functioning
again pretty much within a weekend. If we didn’t have the phone systems working, you
know, the business was at a standstill. The Telstra IP solution gives us a hosted solution.
It just means that it’s nice and simple. If we’re rolling out a site its pick up,
relocate the phone, plug it back in and it works.
EFFIE: Implementing something like a TIPT hosted platform allowed Jason to roll the
solution out without having to physically be at every site.
JASON: The Telstra IP solution instantly gave us free phone calls between the sites, the
staff all got access to voicemail straight into their e-mail, they now had all the functionality
of a major office. We deployed a number of TIPT video phones
with the solution which means that our small sites around the country – such as far north
Queensland – can have a video conference phone, it can connect up to our Telstra One
Touch conference systems in our large meeting rooms.
EFFIE: Brickworks have also implemented a TIPT video app on their iPads and their iPhones.
JASON: The video conferencing has reduced our travel significantly. You know, we’ve
saved at least 10% across the business. The solution definitely frees up my time and all
of my team’s time. It’s been amazing to see how much quicker we can resolve a phone
issue or how quickly we can move people around. Items that used to take hours to take care
of, now take minutes. We’re really saving some costs and improving
the service we can deliver from an internal IT department.
