Hello, I’m Major General Tony Crutchfield. A lot of people live work and play at Fort
Rucker. It’s our Army home. A lot of us show up for work at about the same time each
weekday and that causes traffic jams at the gates. To help alleviate that, and also to
make Fort Rucker look more like a home instead of an uninviting fortress, I had the barriers
removed at the gates. It gives the post a more appealing look and helps get people to
and from their places of work faster and, I might add, without sacrificing security.
But with that great news comes responsibility – personal responsibility – for all of
us. Please be safe at the gates. Take it slow and pay attention. We can’t afford to lose
one member of our Fort Rucker family, especially if that loss is because of carelessness.
And while I’m on that subject, I’ll go ahead and remind you once again that using
a cell phone, whether for talking or texting, is illegal while driving on Fort Rucker, so
don’t do it. The rule doesn’t exist to limit your fun or even deter communications.
It is illegal because it gets people hurt and sometimes killed.
More than 5,000 people died on American roads in 2009 because of distracted drivers. When
you drive, pay attention. All it takes is a split second for things to go terribly wrong.
We’re a family at Fort Rucker. Let’s look out for each other in the same way we look
out for our families at home. Thank you very much and Above the Best!
