I'm Leslie Wright, Director of the Faulconer Gallery
Molecules that matter is an exhibition of
art, science and popular culture
that surveys ten molecules that helped shape the 20th century
The works of art in the exhibition help to underscore
how prominent these chemicals are in our lives
The art is either made out of those chemicals or is about those chemicals
and often presents issues of the wonder of these chemicals
as well as the unintended consequences they have had on our lives
this exhibition has a little bit of something for everybody... It has art for the art lovers
but we hope that while they are in the exhibition, they will also pay attention to the science
and get fascinated by that and we hope those who come to look at the molecules
will then turn around and look at the art in the show,
and find something there to be interested in as well.
In particular we think people who are scientists or artists will have an
added appreciation for the similarities in the types of work that scientists and artists do.
then there's so much wonderful popular culture material in the show
that I'm sure that people will be fascinated just to have the thought that...
none of these things were there in our lives, a hundred years ago...
