Amy and I will be arriving in katmandu on July 14, 2013
Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and it is also the location of the KAT center
where we will be volunteering for one month.
On august sixteenth we will be flying to Lukla airport to begin our trek.
The airport is only accessible to helicopters in small aircraft such as the
one pictured.
This is a short one hour flight.
Kathmandu stands at an elevation of 1400 meters.
Lukla airport also called Tenzing-Hillary airport in memory of
Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norteg,
the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on
May 29th 1953.
In 2010, Lukla was named the most dangerous
airport in the world.
It sits at an elevation of 2860 meters.
From Lukla we will trek to Manjo.
This is a six hour trek on august sixteenth.
Manjo is a Sherpa village and stands at an elevation of
2860 meters.
On our second day, August 17th
We will trek to Namche Bazaar.
This is a six hour trek and mostly uphill.
On August 18th will take a rest day in Namche
to allow for acclimatization
Namche is a village with beautiful mountain views and the first views of Everest.
It is the main trading center for the Khumbu region with a population
of 1647.
Namche is at an elevation of
3440 meters.
We'll trek to Tyangboche on August 19th
this is considered one of the most challenging days of the trek. It is
about six-and-a-half hours with a lot of steep uphill climbing.
Tyangboche is a location of Tyangboche monastery, which is a UNESCO world
heritage site.
in the Sagermathanational park
this area has outstanding views of the himalayan mountains
Tyangboche stands at an elevation of 3867 meters
On August 20th we will trek for about
five hours to reach Dingboche.
On August 21st we'll remain here for a day of rest and acclimatization.
Dingboche is a summer pasture village with lots of Yaks
it is also the location of memorial grounds of the fallen Sherpas and climbers
Dingboche stands at an elevation of 4530 meters.
We will trek to Lobuche on August 22nd
Lobuche is a mountain range with two main peaks Lobuche far east and
Lobuche east.
It stands at an elevation of 6145 meters
On August 23rd we'll trek to Gorakshep
a small village that sits at the edge of a frozen lake bed covered with sand.
This is the final acclimatization stop and in the afternoon we'll trek to
base camp.
Gorakshep stands at an elevation a 5164 meters.
After a trek to basecamp we will return to Gorakshep on August 24th
and stay the night
Kala Patthar is a mountain range that we'll trek to on August 24th
before beginning the descent. This is a two-hour tough uphill climb with amazing
views of Mount Everest
Kala Patthar stands at an elevation of 5600 meters.
August 23rd in the afternoon we'll make our way to Everest base camp
we will be returning to Gorakshep to spend the night.
There are two Everest base camps, each on opposite sides of Mount Everest.
South base camp is in Nepal and at an altitude
of 5364 meters.
South base camp is not accessible by vehicle and this is a base camp that we
will be visiting
the second base camp is north basecamp this is in Tibet and stands at an
elevation of 5150 meters.
we will begin our descent on August 24th
Our first stop will be Pheriche
which is another summer pasture village filled with grazing yaks
in this village they have the himilayan rescue association clinic
Pheriche stands at an elevation of
4371 meters.
On August 25th
descent into Khumjung.
This is our final stop before treking back to Lukla an August 26th
flying back to Khatmandu on August 27th.
Khumjung is a village with a the population of 1809 people.
The village has the hillary school
along with the Khum hospital
and a monastery
which supposedly houses a yeti scalp.
This village has modern communications
such as internet, mobile and land line phones
Khumjung stands at an
elevation of 3970 meters
