do you have an iphone
do you use gmail
do you ever delete your email messages what did you know that you probably
aren't actually deleting them? stick around because eleven seconds from now
on this show you how you can make sure that you're actually deleting
messages in gmail from your iphone
THIS..
is GrownUpGeek.com
you probably know what the lease
basically means when you hit the delete button
your email message gets deleted
obviously it's not ever fully deleted as far as law enforcement is concerned if
they really needed to get that message they could for the most part when you
press delete, that message is gone.. you're not gonna be able to be easily
get it back.. somebody else in your family is not going to be
able to go through your email messages and get it back
so it's basically gone
but did you know that on iphone if you use gmail by default when you hit that..
what you think might be the delete button that actually deleting it your
you are 'archiving' it..
So what does archiving mean?
basically just means it's moving it out of your inbox folder
into your "all messages" folder
doesn't delete it...
it's still there anybody can access it still searchable so when you think
you're actually deleting it really all you're doing is moving it
to another folder or it's not his easily visible sign cluttering up your inbox
the idea behind this is that google thinks you should never have to delete
an email message because you never know in five years from now you might need to
search for it and would be great if you actually found that you thought maybe it
deleted it but you needed it
years later and it was there
but sometimes there's messages
that you really do want to delete
..we all have them...
let me show you real quick how you can actually make sure that they're being
deleted..
this applies to all iOS devices iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
only if you are using
gmail on that device through the built-in mail app.. using the web based gmail
even though there's still archiving going on but i'm gonna show you won't change
those settings
first let me show you what archive looks like
and then i'll show you what the lead looks like so that you know which one
you're set up for and then i'll show you how to go in and change it
this is what archive looks like when you go in
to delete the message
you notice that the red delete button appears but it doesn't really say the
least
it says "archive"..
uses by default how it is so this is probably unless you change it this is
probably how your iphone is setup
this is what the 'delete' looks like
when you swipe or select editor press the delete button it actually says the
lead noticed the trash can appears instead of the file folder icon
signifying archive
to change your settings to make sure that you're actually deleting your email
messages
from your home-screen..
go to "settings"
then scroll down to "mail, contacts & calendars" and tap it
then under accounts, tap your gmail account that's listed
and right there down near the bottom just above where it says the leading
help
you'll see the archive messages switch
if that's on that means that your message is actually being archived were
moved out of the inbox when you may think you're deleting them so to turn
off that archive option to make sure that your messages are actually getting
deleted just happened to switch it off
when you go into the lead a message instead of seeing the archive icon or
the word archive he should now see the word delete
of course you can do the opposite also
if you messages are already being deleted and you won't have them archived
instead when you hit the delete button with the arcade button
just going to your settings
mail contacts and calendars
cap on your gmail account
internet archive messages option from off
now all of your messages will be archived instead of deleted
this is actually a pretty simple tip but this whole archive versus delete
situation can be confusing so if you have any questions please just post a
comment below we try to answer every question
