Radio without barriers is how the One voice project is described. It's a supported service
for people with disabilities. I had a brain injury when I was 12, I was riding my bike
and I was hit by a drunk driver, landed on the kerb, woke up in hospital over a week
and a half later. Getting involved with radio gives Chris something to focus on after his
life changing condition. I didn't understand what was going on inside me I just felt like
I had a burden following me, something holding me down and blocking me but my nerve endings
are rewiring so the parts of my brain that were damaged are being used on other parts
of my brain. The programme has a positive impact by increasing confidence and skills
of the people involved as well as the chance to meet new friends. And the idea of this
project is to give people a voice that are often marginalised and if we are going to
be talking about these issues then why not have the people who it affects themselves
talk about their best positions to be making that commentary. I don't interact with very
many people normally but now I have met all these other people that work on one voice
as well and I feel I have made good friends with Abraar and Chris and Paul. Although I
have a disability it doesn't mean that I don't have abilities, brings a routing to my life
and routine brings happiness. And happiness makes everything ok.
