The latest “ARK-LA-MISS” briefing for March 20th, 2014.
Overview.
So far this year, rainfall for central and northern portions of Mississippi and Louisiana
have received between 5 and 10 inches so far. For portions of south Mississippi, areas have
had slightly more ranging between 10 and 15 inches with some isolated locations just
slightly above 20 inches. Pulling up the year to date normals, it is readily apparent
a vast majority of the region is below normals in the yellow and orange coloring. Only a few
small pockets are near normal in the gray to slightly green shading. Drought conditions
will continue to persist as the next week, while offering several rain chances, will not
amount to high totals. Only once quarter to three quarters of an inch are forecast through the
next week.
Clear and cool conditions expected tonight with lows in the upper 30s and low 40s.
Tomorrow will be a fantastic day and could not ask for a better Friday. Full sun and
highs in the mid to upper 70s are expected.
Weather changes up a bit this weekend with a weak cold front sliding through the region
Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. Looks like most of the rain will hold of for Saturday
with generally a nice day expected. Rain chances will go up late Saturday into Sunday
morning. Highs will drop from the 70s Saturday to the 60s Sunday. Rain is expected to
clear out during the day Sunday with it not being a total wash out.
The break from rain will be brief and chances look to increase again Monday night
into Tuesday with a secondary cold Canadian originating front moving through. Temperatures
will be back below normal early to mid week. A late season freeze could occur next
Wednesday.
As was just mentioned a cold Canadian airmass will settle over the region by mid-week
with below normal temperatures expected. A late season freeze could be possible and harm
sensitive vegetation and any already planted crops.
