Daniel Goldstein Interview
TS: Hello I’m here with Daniel Goldstein, he is a first year here at Grinnell College
and he is this year’s Midwest Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the
Week. Congratulations Daniel. First of all, did this come as a surprise to you?
DG: Yeah it actually did, I didn’t even know about it until I went to practice a couple
days later and Diedra told me.
TS: What did winning an honor of this nature mean to you?
DG: It’s really good for me I think. It helps me be more confident definitely. Now
I want to try even harder to keep doing as well.
TS: Before I get ahead of myself this comes after a great performance at the Grinnell
Invitational this past weekend where you won both 1 meter and 3 meter diving. You opened
the meet on Friday with a 3 meter event and you won that. What was going well for you
during that event?
DG: It didn’t start off that great, my first four dives were kind of eh. Then as the meet
went on I started doing much better and I just kind of rolled with it.
TS: Did that give you quite a bit of confidence for Saturday’s competition?
DG: Yeah definitely.
TS: Saturday you’re during the 1 meter event and you win that, and you also have a score
that qualifies in terms of NCAA regional championships. Talk about that a little bit and how that
works.
DG: There’s a certain score you need to get, either at conference or twice during
the season. This was my first of hopefully two that I’ll be able to get. That will
qualify me to go to the regionals which I think are in San Antonio, Texas. From there
I’m not sure what place you need to get, but from there you can qualify for nationals.
TS: In this past weekend’s meet with the 1 meter after winning the 3 meter, what was
going right for you in the 1 meter?
DG: I definitely started off much stronger and just kept it going throughout the whole
meet. I had one or two misdives but overall it went really well.
TS: I find it interesting that we’re about halfway through the season yet already Grinnell,
the men’s team have won four of these Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the
Week. What do you think that says for the team?
DG: I think it’s really good for our team. It shows how hard we work.
TS: Talk about your first year, the adjustment to competing at the collegiate level. Has
that been difficult for you?
DG: It’s definitely been difficult since this is the first time I’ve ever competed
3 meter. They didn’t have that at my high school. I pretty much learned all my dives
on that the week before the first competition. That’s the biggest change I think.
TS: Talk about any goals you have for this season. We probably already touched on one
of them, talk a little bit about that.
DG: Right now I’m just hoping to do well the next few meets and hopefully get a second
qualifying score so that I can go to regionals. From there I’ll hopefully do well and possibly
get a chance to go to nationals.
TS: Well again congratulations on this and good luck in the future.
DG: Thank you.
