My daddy had seen a lot of people
who played guitar, who didn't work.
So he said, "Choose if you want to
be an electrician or a guitarist."
He said, "I never saw a guitarist
that was worth a damn."
ELVIS ON TOUR
A player got so mad once, he threw
his glove on the floor and missed!
This is my favorite city, and people
have asked questions about our tour.
Our tour is 15 days. We started in
Buffalo, now we're in San Antonio.
We've eaten everything
from Yankee pot roast to grits.
We've been in 15 cities in 15 days.
Elvis has been in 15 cities,
and he's not running for President.
But he would have won every primary!
People ask why I'm in this show.
Well, Elvis needed a sex symbol ...
... for the medicare group.
It's a low stage with low lights,
so they'll be right in your eyes.
Be careful backing up because
the orchestra is right behind us.
- How far is Jackie?
- There's no intermission yet?
Not yet. Everyone is waiting.
Could you sign this for me?
We came over too soon ...
I've never gotten over stagefright.
I go through it every show.
I'm pretty concerned,
I'm thinking about the show.
I don't let myself or my people
get completely comfortable with it.
I remind them
that it's a new crowd out there, -
- so it's got to be
like the first time we go on.
If Hal comes up and I don't see him,
tell him to come back again.
- You know about the stage?
- Yeah.
I don't like to stay backstage long.
I've got to please the crowd.
I've got to excite them, make them
happy, and give myself to that show.
Somebody could say to me, "Your head
just exploded." I wouldn't hear it.
That's a good sound out there.
You're beautiful. Thank you.
Take it on, Jerry.
It seems a little bit slow
in the beginning.
Sounds weird, doesn't it?
On those headphones. God!
- Do you want to try it again?
- Sure.
That one girl really reached!
- How far is it?
- About five, seven minutes.
Hell, we could have taken a boat,
a rowboat.
We just left the hotel,
we'll be there in five minutes.
That's the Gator Bowl over there.
Is that where we got caught
that night? At the Gator Bowl?
And you guys put me in a paddy wagon
and took me to the hospital?
Yeah, we fought all night long.
- I'll see you up there.
- Okay, Charlie.
Thank you. I'd like to introduce you
to the members of my group.
First of all, the J.D. Sumner
and the Stamps Quartet.
The young ladies that opened up
our show, the Sweet Inspirations.
Puldro Nozar.
The girl who does our high-voiced
singing, Kathy Westmoreland.
On lead guitar is James Burton.
Rhythm guitar is John Wilkinson.
On the drums is Ronnie Tutt.
And the bass is Jerry Sheff.
On the piano, Glen Hardin.
And the guy who gives me my water
and my scarves is Charlie Hodge.
Our conductor is Joe Guercio.
The Joe Guercio Orchestra.
We'd like to do a new song for you.
If we goof this up,
just bear with us, we'll do it.
"Burning Love," baby. Get on it.
Good show. Good show.
- How was the sound in the building?
- Very good.
- Did this come off or what?
- I took it off.
It cut my wrist on both sides.
- Look at what that sign says.
- Flip-flop here!
It's a hot time in Florida ...
... and a rainy night in Georgia.
- You got in on the last word.
- I was playing lead.
Now, for his second appearance -
- of three appearances
on our show tonight, Elvis Presley!
Thank you very much!
It was wild in the early days.
I have seen his clothes torn off,
he was scratched all over, bleeding.
Those wild fans didn't mean to hurt
him, they just wanted his clothes.
The first time I was onstage,
it scared me to death.
I didn't know why they were yelling.
I didn't realize how my body moved.
So I asked the manager what I did.
He said, "Whatever it is,
go back and do it again."
We did two shows a night for five
weeks. Afterwards we'd sing gospel.
We grew up with it,
from the time I was two.
It more or less puts
your mind at ease. It does mine.
That's all I could do.
That's enough. Let's take
a collection and go get some coffee.
LET'S KEEP DAYTON CLEAN
What happens when he comes
through this door?
He goes up the elevator to his room.
But I mean, what does he do?
Why don't you just tell me?
He comes through this door,
moves around and takes the elevator.
- What is this? The kitchen?
- No, this is the freight elevator.
- Do many people do that?
- There's quite a few.
A lot of celebrities
come through here?
All the conventions and things
in the past has come through here.
- Are you glad that Elvis is coming?
- It's wonderful.
- Do you know anything about him?
- I was raised in his hometown.
- Are you gonna say anything to him?
- Well, that just all depends.
Are you looking forward to seeing
him? Show us where he's coming in.
He's coming through this door here.
There's two doors in this entrance.
He's coming through this door here
at this entrance.
Then he opens the door like this.
And then this one, the outer door,
goes back like this.
We'll be ready in a few moments.
We appreciate your kindness
in bearing with us.
This happens once in a lifetime,
but everything is being rectified.
We want you to enjoy the show
and have a good time.
Now I'd like your attention
for some important announcements.
We ask, once the show starts,
that you do not stand, -
- that you do not congregate
in the aisles or approach the stage.
Everyone here can have a good time
and enjoy the show.
Good thing he said that!
Enjoy yourselves
and thank you once again.
You're a beautiful audience.
Thank you.
You're really fantastic.
Wait a minute, baby. Hang loose ...
Close your mouth.
My first movie
was called Love Me Tender.
- I can't help it.
- He didn't die.
I can't believe I saw him!
I've loved him for nine years.
I'm so happy I saw him.
I still can't believe it.
I couldn't believe it.
I thought I was gonna faint.
He'll always be number one,
and he'll never grow too old.
He's still so handsome.
He's just the greatest.
He's made me so happy.
I've loved him for about ten years.
I have scrapbooks of Elvis.
I love him very much.
We even imitate him
in our spare time.
We pretend we're playing guitar
with his albums on.
We both belong to his fan club
in Kansas City.
He has a style of his own.
Elvis, he started the whole thing.
He does something to me.
He does, the way he moves,
the way he talks.
Are these yours, honey?
Every record, every album,
every movie and every scrapbook, -
- every clipping and everything
about Elvis ... He's got it all.
We came all the way from Houston.
I just had an operation,
but I wouldn't miss him for nothing.
See you all later.
Good rehearsal, kids.
How much time do we got?
You got three and a half hours
and four days and 23 seconds.
I'd like to turn the lights up
and take a look at you.
Just leave them on for a minute.
It's funny, because I can't see you.
I can only see the first row.
There's a lot of folks out there.
And out there, too.
For those of you who can't see,
this is an owl.
Some little kids took up some money.
Okay, I'll take the money
and give it to charity.
We'll give it to the Salvation Army.
It's a good charitable institution.
We have lots of friends
in the Army.
When Elvis comes, it's an occasion
for any section of the country.
He has lots of fans here. Some from
as far north as Winchester, -
- down to Winston-Salem, as far west
as Bristol, east to Richmond.
- How many people are out here?
- About six or eight hundred.
- Are you gonna keep that money?
- It's going to the Salvation Army.
Women have been calling me all day
wanting to know when you'd get here.
Does this key fit the vault?
It fits the vault, the jail
and all the public buildings.
And the bank!
Are you gonna play
"Hound Dog"?
That was my favorite ...
Oh, I broke a string ...
It's okay. The girls just made it up
to give you something unusual.
You never play the guitar,
and they wanted you to have one.
I played here before.
I was in Roanoke when I started out.
These are the names listed on it.
"To Elvis, from your friends."
- Can I do anything for you?
- Everything is fine.
The city manager and the council
members send their regards.
They would have liked to be here
to receive you, -
- but we know you have a lot to do.
Your show starts at 8:30.
So again, many thanks for coming
to Roanoke. We'll enjoy your show.
Any time you're through here,
we'll be right at your attention.
Thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
WHBQ, Memphis.
We're ready to get it on with some
rock-and-roll, Memphis-made music.
Here's my man, Elvis himselvis,
with "Suspicious Minds."
I plead innocent of all charges.
I hear that you're a shy, humble,
wonderful man. Do you agree?
I don't know why they think that.
I got this gold belt and ...
The Elvis Presley Show
is a complete sellout.
No one can enter the Coliseum lobb
without a ticket.
It's necessary that
everyone hold their own ticket.
Thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen ...
I would like to ask the Stamps
to sing a song that they do.
It's called "Sweet, Sweet Spirit."
Just listen to them, please.
Thank you ... Beautiful!
You're a fantastic audience,
we love to sing for you.
Elvis has left the building.
We want Elvis!
