In the artists studio kneaded erasers are used commonly but effectively. And it all
began in 1844 when Charles Goodyear a self taught chemist received a patent numbered
3633 for the vulcanization of rubber, Which allowed the creation and mass production of
what we know now to be the common eraser. Thank you Charles. The name kneaded eraser
comes from the verb to knead which means to work or to mold. In other words you are able
to manipulate its shape to to fit your needs. Now when comparing a kneaded eraser to a mars
plastic eraser one must exercise caution. We notice one of the major difference is when
leaves its rubbery skin behind in dark particles of death. Go away dark particles nobody likes
you. On the contrary kneaded erasers can achieve a similar goal without sacrificing its skin.
This is because it observes the graphite thus it last much longer than other erasers. Graphite,
charcoal, and pastel all fall short to its capabilities. However it falls short when
it comes to dark deep pressurized lines. Theres no hope here lets move on. Because of its
ability of adhesion it is able to erase simply by dabbing it on a paper. This is also known
as lifting the whites we can shape the eraser to how ever we feel like making a point will
allow us to erase with precision. This helps with highlights and detail work. In this example
the kneaded eraser is used less as a common eraser and more as an artist tool. This is
known as a subtractive drawing technique, where we more or less change the value of
the drawing by adding highlight, indicating a light source, or just more details to the
drawing. once your eraser gets a bit dirty simply stretch it out and fold it back on
itself, repeat this process until its like new. Excellent. Once in a long while your eraser will appear to get
darker and darker, to a point of over saturation, in other words eraser DEATH. When it gets
to this point it does not erase in fact even worse, it smears the drawing, its just best
to just throw it away. Fear not however kneaded erasers are relatively cheap Generals makes
a jumbo size as well as a smaller version. Finally enter the dramatic realm of sculpture,
by pulling, folding, stretching, it into an impromptu sculpture. In this example I made
an Alpaca you can tell its an alpaca and not a llama by the shape of its ears. I hope this
video helped you in one way or another to increase your knowledge on what is an essential
artist tool. So anyway thanks for watching guys, if you enjoyed this video please leave
comments down below I want to know your feedback. I know i’ve been gone for a while but I
will hopefully post another video next week. Bye!
