Hey everybody, it’s Amy from CraftyMcFangirl.com Thanks for joining me for another Studio Ghibli
inspired craft Today we are going to paint rocks and turn
them into Totoro Paper Weights
You can find links for all the materials you will need for this project
in the description below the video both on YouTube and at CraftyMcFangirl.com
You will need light brown, cream, light gray, light blue, white, black, pink and green paint
You can find all of these colors in individual bottles
or mix them using any basic acrylic paint set
The paperweights are made from river rocks.
You can get these online from Amazon or from the Dollar Store
Paintbrushes
and a gloss sealant like mod podge
I started with all my paint on a palette. But don’t make the mistake I made. You only
need a little bit of paint. This is way too much!
Next it’s time to choose your rocks. I got this package of black river rocks from the
Dollar Store.
I pulled out several rocks and sorted out the final three I wanted to use.
My rock choices and paint colors are based on this reference picture.
Paint the large rock tan, the medium rock light blue and the small rock white. Make
sure to add the ears at the top.
Use two coats of paint for complete coverage. And clean up any mistakes around your edges
by scraping the paint away with a toothpick or Xacto Blade.
Let the paint dry completely before continuing.
Paint a white belly on the blue Totoro and a cream belly on the tan Totoro
Once the paint is dry, continue adding the details on Totoro’s belly and use black
paint to add eyes, nose and whiskers to the faces.
Add the fine details to the eyes.
An optional step is to add a little pink to the cheeks.
And finally add the green leaf on Totoro’s head.
These guys are almost done. I made a few adjustments off camera. I painted over the pale pink cheeks
with a brighter pink to make them show up better. I also outlined the leaf with black
to make it pop.
Let the paint dry completely before continuing.
Once the paint is dry it’s time to add a protective gloss coating with a gloss glaze
or sealant like Mod Podge.
Make sure to seal the back and the front completely.
Once the Mod Podge is dry, your project is done! These cute paperweights would make great
addition to any Totoro fan’s desk.
