A Key element that is critical of any organization in the modern business world is proper management.
The Business Management program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College is designed
to help a student to develop the management and decision-making skills necessary to be
a good leader in a competitive business environment and begin a professional career.
The program is taught at the Gordon County, Walker County, and Whitfield Murray Campuses
of Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
(Gerald McFry) In the business management program we study
about training -- employee training and development, performance management and, probably most
important of all, leadership and the principals of management -- planning, organizing, and
controlling, those type of things.
(Announcer) Gerald McFry is the Director of the Business
Management program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College and an instructor at the
Gordon County and Whitfield Murray Campuses.
Gerald says that there are aspects of supervision and management in all fields of business and
industry.
(Gerald McFry) Management is kind of unique as a study. You
can be a manager of most any profession. As a matter of fact, generally speaking, almost
all professions do have managers or supervisors of some sort. So, whatever you are interested
in, whatever your skills and interest are, you can be a manager or a supervisor in that
particular profession.
(Grace Beam) A graduate . . . can pursue a lot of different
kinds of things. They can be supervisors and managers of large companies, small companies,
they can run their own companies. We look at business from all sorts of perspectives:
private sector, public sector, non-profit.
(Announcer) Grace Beam is an instructor of Business Management
at the Walker County Campus of Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
(Grace Beam) Here at GNTC we try to keep our education
interesting, fun and effective. One of the things I do in my classrooms is, instead of
boring old lectures, what we try to do is make it competitive, we have a lot of games,
quizzes, group activities, and a lot of discussion.
(Announcer) Every year instructors at Georgia Northwestern
Technical College nominate their most outstanding students for the Georgia Occupational Award
of Leadership competition.
GOAL is a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia and it honors excellence
in academics and leadership among the state's technical college students. GOAL winners are
selected at each of the state's 25 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regents college
with a technical education division.
The students selected to win the GOAL Award at GNTC in 2012 and 2013 were both Business
Management majors.
(Gerald McFry) We're real proud of the students who have
been in the Business Management program. We've had several that have been nominated for the
GOAL Award and last year the GOAL Award was chosen from the Whitfield Murray Campus and
his name was Rog'er Haikal and this year Daniel Groce from the Business Management program
at the Whitfield Murray Campus was also chosen as GOAL winner. So we got some talented students
that are really exhibiting good leadership characteristics.
(Rog'er Haikal) I came from overseas from Lebanon. Business
Management, as we know it, is a broad field . . it prepared me to be a better leader of
what I do and knowing the difference between good customer service and poor customer service
and knowing how to run my store efficiently and increase sales in a way and being a good
team player as well. And it helped me as well with being connected with people as the business,
in the business field and not to mention it allowed me to have a lot of business knowledge
in a short amount of time, being in the Business Management field at GNTC.
(Daniel Groce) I was fortunate enough to advance in the speech
competition and be chosen to represent Georgia Northwestern for the 2013 GOAL award. I feel
privileged for that. . . It was cool to get to represent the college at the capital in
Atlanta. I got to meet Nathan Deal and I got to
meet my Dalton representative Charlie Bethel and we had a private meeting . . . I want
to be an entrepreneur when I graduate and make my own business and I think its very
valuable in today's economy.
(Announcer) The program offers students the option of
either an associate's degree or diploma. In addition, there are four specializations for
students to choose from when pursuing an associate's degree, including:
General Management
Human Resource Management
Operations Management
And
Service Sector Management
(Gerald McFry) The people that tend to come into the Business
Management program are the ones that typically are going to be leaders. They have done things
in the past that put them into leadership roles and they are interested in leading people
or are in business and industry and those type of people really do well in Business
Management.
(Daniel Gross) I felt like in business - leadership is the
key goal and I felt like through high school and playing sports and being active that I
had a strong knack for leadership and I wanted to carry it over into the business program
here and after my experiences at my other college I felt like Georgia Northwestern could
help me achieve my career.
(Announcer) The Business Management program at Georgia
Northwestern Technical College prepares students for an extensive array of business options
from large corporations to small franchises, or even self-employment. So if you're ready
to meet the challenges of an ever-changing global marketplace or desire a leadership
role in business or industry, then consider a degree in Business Management.
(Gerald McFry) The job outlook for students that graduate
with a degree in Business Management is always going to be bright. You always have to have
good managers and supervisors no matter what the profession whether it is in the health
and medical field . . the business field, or the public service fields any time you
have a group of people you always have to have a manager or supervisor.
