[M. Mosbey] Hi, I’m Mitch Mosbey, your host for the October 13th edition of IUPUI’s
The Spot. IUPUI students and staff deliver more than
90,000 hours of service to different community agencies and schools. Be a part of this impact
by registering for Make a Difference Day. The event takes place Saturday, October 23rd
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For registration and more information, visit csl.iupui.edu/ocs.
USG Senators were interested in finding out from the student body if they know what USG
is and what they do for students. The Spot stepped in to help; here’s what we discovered.
[C. Jordan] Over 30,000 students and 21 schools in the academic units on this campus, we wondered
how many of them would know what USG was and that USG stood for the Undergraduate Student
Government and the things that it accomplished. [T. Greco] One morning, Chelle and I polled
students, who were willing to participate. Of the 25 students that were willing to participate,
we asked them if they knew what USG was and what it stood for.
[C. Jordan] Of the 25, 18 said “no” and seven said “yes.” After a few people,
we became aware that maybe they didn’t understand what the acronym stood for, so we asked a
few if they could guess what the acronym stood for.
[J. Voivodas] Maybe, United States Government. [K. Lipking] The University Student Government.
[C. Jordan] Do you know what USG is? [D. Roembke] Undergraduate Student Government.
[C .Jordan] Give me a high five. [T. Greco] The seven students that responded
that they knew what USG was, we asked them if they actually knew what USG did here on
campus. [J. Fuller] I am unsure what the undergraduate
student council does; I don’t know. [S. Lee] I know that they are working to get
the fall break. [T. Greco] USG has helped lower prices with
Chartwell’s for student organizations. USG also helped with amplified sound in the atrium
which is in the campus center from 12 – 1. Also USG helped to steady library hours
during the weekend finals. [C. Jordan] And several years ago they supported
the building of the campus center and here it is for students to enjoy. And if it wasn’t
for USG home coming wouldn’t be here [T. Greco] If you’re interested in learning
more about Undergraduate Student Government or an organization that would like to get
involved in USG you can go to our website at usg.iupui.edu or send us an email at usg@iupui.edu.
[C. Jordan] Make an impact here at IUPUI and make sure that your voice is heard
[M. Mosbey] Mark your calendars on Saturday, October 30th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the
2nd Annual IUPUI Fine Arts and Crafts Fair held at the IUPUI Campus Center. Admission
is free, and over 50 venders will be showcasing a wide variety of items.
As you may recall, the IUPUI Common Theme recently held No Impact Week, an entire week
filled with Common Theme activities, designed to explore the impact of your daily actions
on the environment. [L. Brothers] The Dark Green team are those
that have made a commitment to maybe go a little bit beyond what was required for No
Impact Week, so in addition to going to the various events on campus; the swap market,
the videos that were happening throughout the week, we also committed ourselves to eating
locally; we also committed to trying to reduce our carbon footprint the best we could as
well and consuming less energy and different initiatives like that.
The biggest role for the Dark Green team, in my perspective, is creating an educational
environment for the campus and for our departments in general. I know that University College
had their own team, and we did a couple of our own little activities here and there,
but it was creating that environment, getting awareness out about the impact that we actually
make on our environment. I think the week went very well. I met all
the goals that I had set out for myself, and the thing that I really liked about it is
it’s a more conscious way of living. You kind of think about where things come from.
[M. Mosbey] Are you still looking for a student organization to be involved in? A new student
organization, Bridge, focuses on important social issues. On Friday, October 8th, you
may have noticed several pairs of military boots covering the ground by Democracy Plaza.
The travelling exhibition, Eyes Wide Open, was sponsored by four student organizations,
including the new student org, Bridge. Visit www.bridgegeneration.org for the details.
Open registration for spring 2011 courses is quickly approaching. Check your registration
date on your Onestart account in the Student Center under the Student Self-Service tab.
Don't know which courses to take in order to fulfill graduation requirements? Make an
appointment with your advisor ahead of time to plan your spring 2011 semester.
That’s it for The Spot this week. Be sure to tune in on October 27th for the latest
campus news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu. I’m Mitch Mosbey, and thanks for Spotting
us!
