So I'm going to use this piece of slab here to show you a variety of different ways to
make textures. Before you make a texture into your slab, you want to go ahead and take a
drywall knife and smooth it out. The smoother it starts, the better it's going to show whatever
texture you've chosen. Now first, I'll show you one of these texture sheets and what they
do. I'm going cut a little piece of the slab with my drywall knife. Just lay it right here.
Now this will stick to your clay like nobody's business. If you roll this right into your
clay, you're never going to be able to pull it off. So what I do, is I hit it with a little
bit of WD-40 before I roll it into the clay, that lubricates it and makes it really easy
to pull off. The WD-40 doesn't hurt the clay, it burns away in the firing and it's no big
deal. Just a really light coating is all you need. And then you take your texture slab
and you roll it onto your clay. And you can do this, this way, you can do it the other
way, you can roll the clay on top of it, it doesn't matter. Take your rolling pin, you
want to try to do this in one roll, because if you go back and forth, you're going to
leave little marks that aren't going to look good. So you put a significant amount of pressure
on one side and roll all the way across. So now we have a cobblestone looking sheet of
clay. And now I'll show you some other ways to texture your clay.
