How soon can I purchase a home after I file for bankruptcy? Hi.
My name is Eric Engel. I'm a bankruptcy attorney with the
Engel Law Group in Seattle, Washington. We get a form of
this question all the time. In general, when you file a Chapter
7 bankruptcy - that means you've exchanged all of your debt for a
fresh start - you must wait at least 2 years before you can
actually purchase a home. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy - that's
commonly the re-payment plan - you can actually obtain a home
in a shorter amount of time. But, the catch is that you have
to get the trustee approval to actually make the purchase.
You're often usually a better candidate for buying a home
after a bankruptcy than before. Now this makes sense because
you've discharged your debt. Why am I telling you this? Because
you're considering filing for bankruptcy and you're concerned
about your ability to buy a home in the future. We deal with this
sort of question every day and we can help you. Give us a call,
our phone number is 206-625-9800. Thank you for
watching our video and have a great day!
