Good evening to all, and welcome to another winter weather briefing from the National
Weather Service in Norman. My name is Ryan Barnes. Letís get started by taking a look
at whatís in store for tonight.
It was a cold damp day for most across Oklahoma, and this trend will continue through the overnight
hours. Freezing fog is expected to develop over much of the region after midnight, and
will become dense at times mainly along and west of I-35. Light icing will be possible
on elevated surfaces from this freezing fog, especially on objects like cars, signs, and
perhaps even bridges and overpasses. If you plan on being out tonight, please use extra
caution while driving.
By late tomorrow afternoon and evening, very light snow is expected to develop across portions
of northwestern Oklahoma, and then spread east and southeast during the late evening
and overnight hours into northern and central Oklahoma. Only minor accumulations, if any,
are expected through sunrise Monday.
By late Monday morning, snowfall will increase a bit over northern Oklahoma. Light snow and
sleet will also be possible mainly along the I-40 corridor, with a light wintry mix over
portions of southern Oklahoma and western north Texas.
The snow will spread southward across north central Oklahoma during the afternoon hours
Monday. Light to moderate snowfall will be possible near Woodward, Enid, and Stillwater.
Snowfall accumulations could exceed one inch there by the early evening hours. Further
south, light snow will be possible from OKC to Ada, with a light snow and sleet mix possible
across southern OK and western north TX.
The snow will continue to shift south and eastward through Monday evening. Right now,
it appears the heaviest snowfall is expected from around 4 to 10 PM Monday from near Enid
and Stillwater, southward towards the eastern OKC metro. Travel conditions may deteriorate
very quickly Monday afternoon and evening, especially along I-44 and I-35 north of OKC.
The snow will come to an end late Monday night across eastern and southeastern OK as drier
mid to upper level air moves overhead. Only very light accumulations are expected after
midnight. However, travel will certainly remain hazardous especially across central and northern
OK as temperatures dip into the single digits and teens early Tuesday morning.
Here are our current snowfall and ice accumulation estimates. These will likely change a bit
as the storm system approaches, so be sure to check back for updates. Some locations
like Enid and Stillwater could receive over 2 inches of snow by early Tuesday morning,
while most locations mainly along and north of I-40 may receive around 1 to 2 inches.
Takeaways Well, that pretty much sums it up. Expect
some freezing fog tonight so be safe out there while youíre driving. Very light snow is
expected to develop as early as late tomorrow afternoon across northwestern and northern
OK. It will then spread south and east Monday, with the heaviest snow likely developing during
the evening hours north and northeast of the OKC metro. For the moment, it appears maximum
accumulations will remain below 4 inches. However, these amounts could increase or decrease
slightly, and the timing of the heaviest snow may also change. Be on the lookout for another
video in the near future as the storm system approaches.
Actions Here are some actions you can take. Prepare
for hazardous travel along and north of I-40, as it appears fairly likely. The worst conditions
could arrive earlier or later so donít count on exact timing right now. Be sure your family
and friends are prepared for another round of very cold conditions Tuesday morning, along
with slick roadways.
