since this client is only a five year old boy, I talked to him on the assessment visit
about his room, what he likes in his room, what he likes to do in there, and then we
did the actual work with his mom, while he was at school.
Here we go, let me show you some before pictures. Things were pushed against the walls which
made the room feel really cramped. Also there were a lot of extra storage containers around
the room holding toys and art supplies. This glider chair wasn't being used any more and
had become a "catch all"for clothes and toys. Behind the chair there was an easel that Andy
couldn't even get to. So, the first step: we got the chair out of the room, and moved
the easel out into the open.
At the end of the bed are more storage containers, that almost block the doorway. The only solution
for this type of toy buildup is to thin out the piles. So we sorted through the containers,
getting rid of anything that was broken or had missing pieces. Then mom helped us decide
which toys weren't interesting anymore.
This amore was full of seasonal things:extra duvets, pillowcases, some snow gear, and all
of that was taken out of this room entirely and put in other storage spots in the house.
We put toys in that top drawer down there, because it's right at the perfect height for
Andy. We removed the clothing rack inside the top cabinet section and filled that top
section with shelves of books.
The dresser just had too many items in it. Who needs 30 teeshirts. The closet was nice
and big, but had no systems in place. So we sorted, donated, and ended up with room on
the floor for containers of favorite toys. We hung hand me down clothes from his brother
in the closet, because they are all still a size or two too big. All the clothes he
can wear are now in his dresser, nice and low, so he can pick out his own clothes and
also be responsible for putting them back later.
Here is what two organizers accomplished for Andy and his mom in three hours:
Andy loved it and wrote his mom a love note when he got home from school. Some other children
can go thrift shopping for treasures now!
