In Latin, Valerian means “to be healthy”. Species are cosmopolitan.
Grow in low and sandy meadows, in humid and shaded places, in forests and zones of mountain.
Of the main root, the rhyzome, very tick, diverge from 8 to 15 brown and whitish roots. When dry, leave a characteristic unpleasant aroma.
It’s a plant with an herbaceous freightage and it measures 1’5 maximum meters.
Leaves are faced, pinnatisect and with sharp lobes and there are from 6 to 10 leaves
They have sawed edges and have present stipules that form a puddle rosette.
Flowers are pentamerous, small and very numerous with a pale pink whitish color.They form a choriamb inflorescence.
Corolla is tubulous.
Gynaeceum has 3 carpels and is infer. Fruit is a capsule with an only seed that measures around 3 mm.
The part that uses is the root. It flowers in summer and autumn.
It characteristic aroma is owed to the valerian acid present in small quantities and forms for split of the “valepotriates”.
The chemical composition of the species is fundamentally formed for essential oils, iridoids, alkaloids and other components.
Medicinal uses of the plant are diverse. It uses as a sedative, as a spasmolytic, and insecticide, as a cardiovascular, and there are another uses.
