Jillian Roberts: The importance of being aware about disabilities is that we can learn so
much from people who are different from us. And it’s important to see people for their
strengths and not for their weaknesses.
Jim Gorske: It’s important to realize that, you know, UF has really tried hard to take
service and supports for students with disabilities beyond, you know, what is legally required.
That focus is primarily the accommodations piece for students.
Chloe Burke: UF is disability friendly because it recognizes that students who are traditionally
seen as disabled are just different.
Jillian Roberts: The sitting volleyball tournament taking place at Southwest Student Rec, is
really important because, it brings awareness to students who are participating and to other
students who are just at the gym about another students reality. UF has the resources and
its disability friendly campus and by increasing more awareness to the student body about individuals
with disabilities on campus we’re able to create a more inclusive environment where
everyone feels like they have access to the resources they need.
Norb Dunkel: We’re building this new residence hall, Cyprus Hall, because of the increased
amenities that are needed for students with disabilities. So Cyprus Hall is going to have,
you know, larger hallways, wider hallways. The elevator cabs are larger. Student with
a wheelchair entering an elevator will just touch a pad on the side of the wall to go
to the first floor or a different pad to go to the second. The rooms would have voice
actuated blinds. There would be a sure hand system that would pick the student up out
of bed and through a track on the ceiling move the student through the room to the vanity
or the bathroom. The bathroom sink moves along a rail along the wall and many, many other
amenities that really will help the student create a comfort in their environment.
Chloe Burke: As a student with a learning difference I’m appreciative and thankful
to UF for making my education a lot more accessible in a multitude of ways.
Norb Dunkel: Students should care about other students and students specifically with disabilities
because when they leave the University they’re going to be employed by companies that may
have their supervisor at with a disability. They may be manufacturing products for persons
with disabilities. You know, the University of Florida has a classroom environment is
the wonderful place to begin to understand the differences in one another and to use
those differences as they leave here and enter the work force.
