Why hello. My name, that I was given at birth was Dorothy Lavern Crowder.
I married at 18, and I was married later on, and you’re not getting any ages,
and that made it Guyton. Lavern is like Luellen, except my grandmother
didn’t know anything about Welsh names. I was born in a house instead of a hospital,
and when I was born, I was born blue. I come into the world fighting
for breath, and she would call me little Van, because people who are into the *** know that
with a collar over your face or a veil over your face, You know what that means.
Well anyway, Dorothy Lavern, but I prefer to be called Lavern.
So what should we talk about today? Well let’s talk about the Hilltop first.
We have a Semolina population, we have Hondurans people here,
we have people from Mexico here, and of course we have the blacks, and the white, the Caucasians.
It’s been very hard for a lot of people here on the Hilltop.
I’ve just found my niche because this place just called to me.
It just got me to have this beautiful home out of no way.
And one thing about me when I come to a neighborhood, I’m gonna clear it out.
I wanna make friends with the people, I let the kids know that I will tell your mother,
so don’t be doing stuff around here. And we’ve had several new families move
in in the past 5, 6 months, and it’s been an upheaval. I’ve been praying for it anyway,
and it’s just gonna be fine. Over here on the wedge, where the park is
right around the corner, although outwardly it looks very good, people tell me there is
a lot of crime going on. I haven’t seen a lot of that, no more than
any other neighborhood. It’s very well kept around there. And the
Somalians have been a blessing to the neighborhood to tell you the truth, as opposed to any draw
back. The Mexican people I have seen here, they
are very hard working people, their properties look good, when you see them in the stores
they are well mannered and well dressed. So over all, I think life on the Hilltop,is
going very well. And to tell you the truth, I even tell my
family, who do not understand why I’m here on the west side, after all, all the blacks
are on the east side, right, or up north, right?
They do not understand why I am here. I told you though, it called me here.
But being this far west, and even further west is the best-kept secret in Columbus.
People are more friendly here. I really do believe that it’s this feeling of wide vistas.
I love the idea of having open space around me. I can not stand this closed in claustrophobia.
Which explains why I have this big house for just a little old lady.
So the west side, I’m gonna tell you, is just the place for me.
It flowers something in me, it engenders something in me in terms of being an artistic person
or a thinking person, when I have room to think.
And I think that is something that is probably for anybody that would recognize that.
Other than that, than if any questions are asked of me, I think that is all I got to
say about the wide vistas of the west side. Maybe we’ll get back to that.
