Volcanic activity in Eritrea and Chile continues to disrupt air travel. As another eruption
shook the Nabro volcano in Eritrea on Wednesday, June 15, an ash plume was sent 11,000 meters
into the air. Due to concerns of aircraft engine failure from ash particles that were
carried to Egypt and Sudan, several airlines suspended all domestic and international flights
to Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. Meanwhile, ash traveling around the globe from the Chilean
volcano in the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcano complex began to disperse sufficiently by
Thursday that many airlines in both New Zealand and Australia reported only a few flights
remaining canceled, with generally resumed service both within their countries and abroad.
Airlines such as Qantas issued statements of apology for the inconvenience of delays,
saying meanwhile that their cautionary actions were intended to ensure the safety of passengers.
Our thankfulness, officials worldwide, for your watchful monitoring to preserve lives.
May such distressing events be curbed through our greater care of Mother Earth
