we have a full service department here at the University at Buffalo. We are the first SUNY department out of the 28 to be state accredited. We do a lot of patrols throughout the 199 buildings on both of our campuses.
Continually we patrol on bicycles, we also have segways that we patrol on, as well as foot patrol and of coarse vehicle patrol we do on a regular basis.
If you see something that seems a little sketchy, report it. Whether or not you're certain or not that something strange is going on, if you have a concern, definately report it and you can do that by calling 645-2222.
911 goes through a dispatch center in downtown Buffalo and it will take a while (a couple of minutes) and it could really delay a police response to assist you. So again its important to call 645-2222 to reach the university at Buffalo's dispatch center.
New York state University police officer Will speaking, What's your emergency?
A year or so ago we were having a problem with car break-ins and we started a project in which we leave vehicle report cars on cars if somebody leaves something in their vehicle.
We tell people not to leave anything in their car including loose change because somebody will break into your car for loose change.
The number of car break-ins has decreased dramatically over the last two or three years that we've been doing this.
UB libraries has approximately 1 million users a year, we'll have at least several hundred students in a library at any time.
We used to have regular, daily, reports of missing items especially laptops.
We did the educational component,we put up table tents. Working with UB micro, we put a registration program in place where they can register a laptop so that if it does get stolen, we'll at least have all the particulars on it.
We also tell people about software that's available where you can track laptops if they're stolen and we can help recover them.
Since we instituted these programs in the fall, we've had very few, probably no more than a half a dozen reported thefts.
We do have a silent witness program where you can come forward and that would be on the UB website. Just go to the University police department and there's a silent witness form where you can come forward that way as well.
One of the other problem solving projects we have is larcenies in residence halls. We have officers walk through with our student aides and they check doors. If we find an open door, we lock it and we leave a notice, a door hanger.
Advising them of the safety problems of leaving an open door.
Well, it's so important to know that *** assaults on campus happen so frequently and they're so under reported. It's important to know where you are, the room number, the building, maybe the parking lot. Some of our parking lots have similar names.
Know if you're in the A lot or the B lot so we can get a patrol to assist the student right away.
A few years ago we worked with University facilities, they had some funding to improve some security structure in the south campus. A result of that was a 2 million dollar project that enhaced all the exsisting lighting on the south campus.
We replaced all the blue light phones with state of the art blue light phones that also have capabilities to send voice messages (warnings) and in addition we added 76 security cameras to the south campus.
When anybody picks up a blue light phone for instance, the cameras zoom in on them and we are able to see who's calling us from teh blue light phone.
We use several methods to notify our students if something happens on campus. We , of coarse, use email postings, and we use manual postings that I'm sure our students have seen. We call it a timely warning. We also started a couple of years ago,
with text alerts for serious problems. We would encourage you to go to the emergency.buffalo.edu and sign up for an emergency text alert.
