Ę[music] Hi. I'm Barbara Murphy, extension educator
with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension based in Oxford County. But I'm also the chair
of the statewide program of Maine Harvest for Hunger.
The purpose of Maine Harvest for Hunger is to encourage gardeners, commercial farmers,
group gardens, to donate their extra produce and get it to people who have limited access
to fresh fruits and vegetables. So why is this program needed? Did you know
that the State of Maine has the highest food insecurity risk of all of the New England
states? More importantly, 43 percent of our food insecure people do not qualify for food
stamps or any other government program. So this is where programs such as Maine Harvest
for Hunger fit in and fill that gap. If you want to get involved in this very exciting
project, visit the Maine Harvest for Hunger website.
We also encourage home gardening by providing tips on gardening skills and how to harvest
produce at its prime. Also it's about food security. We provide information on how to
safely preserve many different types of fruits and vegetables.
