One of the most popular looks for 2013, and my personal favorite, is inspired by travels,
antiques and really celebrates your eclectic finds. Our goal with this beautiful large
living and dining room was to give it a more intimate feel.
Strategically painting the ceiling a rich earthy tone instantly creates a cozy effect
linking the two spaces together. At the same time, the ceiling color draws your attention
to the cherished collections, accessories and eclectic furniture in the space.
To provide harmony all this warmth needs to be balanced with a touch of cool, so we painted
the walls with a soft blue-gray and also introduced metal into the space with a statement coffee
table.
The brick fireplace was old, tired and a little bit dated. And, you might not think you can
paint brick, but it’s actually very simple to do and it’s so effective, as you can
see. We painted it simply Monterey White and that just gives it the sophistication it needs
to fit perfectly into this space.
For the second time around we took a much more traditional route and used a creamy white
on the ceiling and the trim. Now, we painted a warm, pale yellow in the living space, which
is nice and cozy and a great contrast to the deep sophisticated gray accent wall.
Now, I love how Silhouette, which is the accent color, recedes into the background allowing
the painted fireplace and the artistic collections to gain more prominence.
To give the dining area a more formal feel and visually separate it from the more casual
living area, we wrapped the Silhouette color right around it. This is a great example of
how color can help to define space and function.
To create this look in your own home, incorporate a rich earthy palette and be sure to employ
some deep tones for contrast. Don’t forget to mix in classic pieces and patterns and
layer in various textures for a timeworn and comfortable look.
