Hi, this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is participating in a multi-state research effort that uses
technology to assist with snow and ice removal.
The idea is to help maintenance staff better determine the kinds of materials to use on
roadways, and how much.
The cabinet is partnering in the research with a South Dakota company that develops
road condition forecasting information systems.
It’s a technology called the Maintenance Decision Support System.
Here’s how it works: Sensors along 11 sections of interstate highways in northern and central
Kentucky provide pavement and air temperatures and other information to the system.
The system analyzes the data and creates a forecast for each of the 11 sections of roadway.
That data, plus information transmitted from sensors placed on snow plows, is used by maintenance
staff in determining the type and quantity of materials to apply to the pavement during
a winter weather event.
