Even though the Ravenscraig steelworks closed 20 years ago, a group of former workers and
their families are planning on making industrial illness claims as a result of the conditions
at the plant.
They believe that toxic fumes generated at the mill led to cases of emphysema and lung
cancer, with more than 100 families already signed up to try and gain millions of pounds
in compensation.
These kinds of claims generally have a three-year cut-off point, but if it was unknown that
conditions could cause illness -- as was the case between the 50s and 80s -- there could
be some hope for the steelworks' surviving workers and their next of kin.
Former shop steward Tommy Brennan told the Daily Record that in the beginning "health
and safety did not exist", but some equipment was provided once British Steel took over
upon nationalisation.
You could make an industrial illness claim if you've developed a chronic condition as
a result of your working environment. Get in touch through handleylaw.co.uk or by calling
