‘Cool Hands: Learning Language at Toowong’
Hands-on learning has taken on a new meaning
at Toowong State School, which is the only bilingual,
bicultural English/Auslan school in Queensland.
Classes benefit from two teachers, a teacher
of the deaf and a class teacher, and all students
are provided with English and Auslan instruction.
Teacher: Julia, what’s another location for an Auslan sign?
Announcer: Classrooms feature innovative technology,
such as interactive whiteboards, flashing light bells
and phone lights, web cams and other digital resources
to ensure an inclusive education.
All students within the school learn how to sign using
Auslan – Australian sign language.
Deaf students have access to all activities
within the school, including sports, school discos
and music programs.
The school’s signing choir is internationally recognised
and is featured in several television programs and
special events throughout Queensland.
