The first two weeks of school are really exciting but they can also be very very dangerous.
We see a lot of young students who this is the very first time they've been away from home and away from parental supervision
and they try to do all the fun things that they've anticipated in college all at once.
You know not many of us make real good decisions when we're intoxicated and have had too much to drink. Some of the bad
decisions can lead to disastrous results.
We see alcohol poisoning. We see arrests for public intoxication and DUI arrests. We see poor time management, they oversleep
and don't go to class.
They get out to parties and many of them haven't drunk much before and so they don't know their limits. They don't know any
tips or rules or restrictions.
Most people don't realize that if you're over the age of 21 that you get arrested for driving under the influence at .05.
Everybody knows DUI is .08, but at .05 you get a DWI. For the average person, that's just a little over 2 beers.
It will certainly cost you a lot of money to get through a DUI. It can have ramifications beyond that. It can affect programs
you can get into, careers that you can get into.
There are many jobs that you can't do if you're a convicted felon. Employers and landlords look at it. You go look for an
apartment after your freshman year and your potential landlord does a background check on you and it shows that you have a
criminal record for drug and alcohol offenses, they're not excited about renting their house or apartment to you.
If you decide to go out and drink go with a buddy, go with a group. Don't leave that group. Don't take a drink from anyone
you don't know and don't put your drink down. Date *** drugs are not a myth, they're real.
Have a designated driver if you're going to go out. And designated driver doesn't mean the least drunk person in the group, it
means the person who's had nothing at all to drink.
People can get themselves alcohol poisoned and you need to watch for that if you're out drinking with your friends or your
friends come home really drunk. Some signs are if you can't wake them up, if they're vomiting and not awake, if they're having
seizures or are pale and cold. You probably need to call 911. Those are signs of alcohol poisoning and could be fatal. You don't
just put somebody in bed and let them sleep it off anymore or you might wake up with a dead friend.
