DIXON GILLETTE: All right, to set up a single-player game, we'll simply select the Single Player
button. And at the top left here, you can see a couple of arrows. Now, these arrows
will allow you to select a different scenario map, and by selecting a different scenario
map will give you different objectives. So you can see here, you can scroll through all
these, and there are quite a few to choose from. You can also use your left and right
arrow keys to scroll through as well, so just depending on which one you prefer. So we're
going to start with the Southwest U.S. scenario. Now, down here to the button left is your
Start and your selectors. By adjusting your start year will, of course, adjust different
objectives that will be available and consequently in your end year. To your right, is your difficulty
level where you can select the Train Table mode all the way through Robber Baron. The
Train Table mode is a mode that you can use that if you want to learn how to build tracks
or you basically just want to build an environment where you can run your trains. There is no
other players in Train Table mode. Investor mode, Financier, Mogul, Tycoon and Robber
Baron are all challenge modes where you'll be able to select a number of computer opponents
to play against. The higher you go will decrease the amount of starting cash that you have
and will also increase the cost to build tracks and other buildings. Your Routing Difficulty
selector down here can be selected to Easy, Medium or Hard. Easy setting will essentially
let your trains drive right through each other, say, if your trains didn't have enough track
to go off of. A Medium setting will make your trains wait for a while, but after a short
period of time, your trains will be able to again drive through each other if they're
on the same track. Now, a Hard setting will not let your trains drive through each other
if you have two trains and they're trying to use the same track at the same time. They
will just sit there until you rectify the situation by building double tracts or switches
or something like that. To the right is your number of AI players. You can play against
all the way from none to three other players. And these check boxes right here, the Randomize
Landscape will essentially give you a random terrain and geographical terrain, and also
the randomized city locations. If you check this and you are playing the Southwest scenario,
none of your cities will ever appear in the same spot. If you don't leave these checked,
all your cities will appear in the same spot, and they're mostly based on reality as far
as their geographical representation goes. So once you have your scenario and selection
all set up, push OK and your game will begin to load up.
