Phil Kaufman: As summer approaches our summer rains are going to return and with the return
of the rains, along comes mosquitos. We have quite a few species here in Florida. Some
of those develop in your backyard, so emptying containers that hold water is very important
to prevent mosquito bites. The other way that you can do that is through the use of repellants,
such as deet. Deet is probably the most effective repellant on the market. There are other devices
and products out there that really don't have a lot of support for their effectiveness,
and so people really need to use the known repellants. We're concerned about mosquitos
because of two reasons. One, they leave an itchy bite that lasts about a day. The other
is that they're able to transmit viruses that cause diseases in humans.
