Dr. Augusta A. Julian: As we celebrate the accomplishments of tonight’s graduates
we know they will be exemplary contributors
in their workplaces and communities.

Dr. Charles T. Wethington: We are all part of a community college movement,
a truly American creation in the world of higher education.
This nation owes much of its success
to the fact that we have dedicated ourselves to educational opportunity for all.
We have always understood that low-cost, public higher education
available to all who can benefit is critical to the growth and development of this country.
Some of you will go onto four year colleges and universities,
some will go directly into the workforce.
No matter where you go, continue your education.
Keep your eyes open to the world around you,
and always see in others what they are capable of being and becoming.
You need to inspire others because of what you’ve done;
show others what can be achieved from a good education.
Show them they could do it if you can do it;
in other words, be a good example.

Denise D. Kappler, student: And the main point I want to express to you this afternoon
is to challenge yourself and remember to persevere.
It’s been an adventure starting off for the second time in my college career.
Returning to school after a one-year break
was a challenge I chose to face with the support of my family and friends.
I hesitated returning to the same school, with the same professors;
I feared judgment.
I realized though that in order to grow, you have to continually challenge yourself.
I knew that it may be difficult,
but through my experience, I was able to succeed.

Diana Harbeson, student: In parting, Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,
“Do not follow where the path may lead.
Go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail.”
Congratulations class of 2010,
and I wish you all the best of luck in the trail that you lead.
