>> DR WALKER: It's actually quite difficult to prove but there's a lot of data, all of the literature's going
if you go right the way back to Heberden, when he published his stuff, who showed
one of his patients with angina would go off to the countryside and saw wood for four months
don't ask me why, I don't know why, but he went to do that
and Heberden notes when he came back he was cured of his angina.
and even in very ancient literature there is this link that people that get themselves fit do better
The medical profession, particularly in the UK, less so in Europe and the US,
we have poo-pooed "physical medicine" as not being one of the mainstream areas
but the more you look at it, the more important it is.
And the rehabilitation, if you take the exercise component out, and you just give them the "softly softly, good talking to"
[Laughter] you don't get the same results.
You need that component in it, there's something about it.
It's what the human animal probably has been designed to do and we've stopped.
You know we change the TV with the remote, we catch the lift down the stairs,
get into a car that's an automatic, we open the window with a button...
There's power steering you can do with one finger...we do nothing!
