Since its foundation in 1878, Stockholm University has played an active roll in society.
The University has always stood for openness and accessibility.
Stockholm University College was established in 1878 as a counterweight to the traditional
universities in Uppsala and Lund.
The new University College had no examinations or tests at its inception.
In the autumn of 1877 the first public lectures were held in the School of Crafts’ building
on Mäster Samuelsgatan in the City.
To begin with lectures were held in science subjects, and soon after in the humanities
and social sciences.
The tradition of public lectures continues to this day.
In 1904 Stockholm University received the right to award degrees.
This issue was driven by the city council, resulting in the city becoming one of the
universitys funders.
The idea of an economically independent university college was abandoned and
the city and the university began to collaborate.
The city wanted the University College to offer legal education, because of the high
demand for lawyers.
After several years of investigations and reforms
Stockholm University College received university status in 1960.
The University College became thereby a part of the overall investment in education and
research that characterized the Swedish post-war era.
Nationalization was a prerequisite for the University to grow at the pace that the new
era demanded.
In the 1960’s the number of students increased sharply, and the University outgrew the facilities
in the inner city.
The move to Frescati began in 1970,
with the purpose of gathering all activities at a single location.
The College of Journalism and the School of Social Work became part of the University
during the 1970’s.

The University is in close reach of almost everything!
During the time that the University has been located at Frescati,
the area has become one of the nation's leading architecture parks,
with contributions from some of Sweden’s most famous 20th century architects.
Stockholm University has expanded significantly during the past 50 years.
Today the University gathers together more people and more study programmes than ever.
Stockholm University is home to some of the country’s leading research
and the location of a number of internationally prominent research environments.
