I used to be bad at drawing.
I really wanted to be good at realism drawing,
and I have never been satisfied, that's why I keep at it.
How did you start to draw realism?
It was during my second year (undergraduate),
I wanted to polish my techniques.
I thought as long I have good techniques, I can do many things.
"If you can't even do well on the basics, you have nothing to brag-about"
someone said that to me once.
On this BNE exhibition, my works are all about basic techniques
in fine arts, in painting to be specific.
I try to advance the basics.
I apply all the basics in my newest works.
I used drawing techniques I was taught before:
the grid method, perspective drawing, and projection drawing.
I made my previous work by first drawing it on two-dimensional plate
and then projecting it onto the canvas.
The result is a perfect one-point perspective drawing,
everything converges at a single point.
There will be distortion if using lens.
Perspective drawing is like a stage,
where audiences are facing it directly, thus single vanishing point.
It becomes the main attraction.
Painting is not just putting colours on the canvas.
There should be a special process in it, which nowadays are not there anymore.
As if the glory of paintings are fading away.
I want to present paintings as the main actor.
The meaning of "artist" from the root word "art"
It is a kind of expertise,
in which you need to master the basic to be the expert.
As an artist, I apply the basic prerequisites on my works.
Craftsmanship is one of them.
It takes all the basic prerequisites for an artist to make good realism paintings.
Why do you want to be an artist?
Because it's sexy!
A really cool profession, you become a centre of attraction,
though it's another story when there is work deadline.
I try not to bother myself for things except my artworks.
I only want to focus making arts.
It is not that I do not care for other things, I just let them flow.
I have no special strategies about facing the market.
If I'm facing an artist's block,
I usually just talk to my fellow artist friends and curators.
I have difficulties in conveying a theme with painting as the medium.
I still stumble on presenting specific issues to art appreciators or the public.
I get stuck and end up not making anything.
That is my weakness, where I could have just used everything I have got to paint.
And everything goes back to basic.
What kind of artist do you want to be?
A "beunghar" one (Sundanese dialect).
What is "beunghar"?
Rich!
So make a living out of your artworks?
Yes!
If I am not making arts, I am not happy.
Because I really have fun making arts.
