I'm Marsha Sowell.
I'm a senior political science major
at the University of North Texas. And I'm an undergraduate student researcher
studying the impact of human rights reporting on civil conflict intensity.
The Ronald E. McNair program here on campus
it's phenomenal.
Basically McNair takes you,
and you don't know anything yet,
and they say well what are you interested in, and they get,
they tell you
go look for a mentor. You come and have a mentor.
and then they do periodic check-ups to make sure your doing research during the summer.
They make you do 40 hours of research a week and you document it.
They pay you to do it,
so essentially they're paying you to benefit yourself.
They help you with graduate applications, they help you
with scholarship applications. Basically they help you with anything
you need.
They offer us a computer lab that we can go to 24/7, keys to Wooten Hall,
keys to the computer lab.
It's like a home away from home, it's such a close-knit little family environment,
and everyone wants to see everyone
succeed and in that environment
people succeed.
The fact that we're [UNT] a research university and we're pushing research that's very
important. I don't know what other universities are doing but I know UNT is
research oriented and that helps a lot whenever the administration and the faculty,
all of the people you need to connect with to become a researcher
are geared towards research and it's very nice.
The UNT faculty are here to help you
and if you give them a chance
they do an amazing job at it. That's why I've been so successful because
people say Marsha here's this [scholarships] you need to apply for it, and I say okay apply for this.
They help me with my application, they're nothing but helpful. They tell me what to
do and they held me do it and it benefits me.
What better atmosphere could you ask for?
UNT is so ideal for anyone because
all you have to do is be willing to help yourself, and
at UNT you can take that and achieve great things.
