What is your name?
My name is Abioseh Judith Smart
How many children and grandchildren have you got?
I have seven children and 17 grandchildren.
What business are you engaged in?
I sell salt, black soap (locally made soap) spices, maggi cubes, sappo (a scrub used for bathing) wood (used for cooking) etc.
How is the business doing?
It is doing well. In fact, today, after this interview, I’m going home to rest.
I will then go back to town to add to my business. I also sell one or two other local items.
Before you received this micro credit, how was your business?
How has it progressed?
I have added more items to the business - even recently, which I was unable to do before.
In fact I even have more stock at home.
How has this microcredit helped you? Any improvement?
It has helped a lot because I don't borrow money from anyone.
Now, if you try to lend money from others, they will not give you. I am now able to conduct and grow my business independently.
I am very happy that I was brought into this program. I was already doing this
– but when I got the funds last year, I am able to do more. I buy larger inventory of wood etc.
Last year we gave 10 people micro credit - 5 repaid and 5 didn't.
Tell us why you have been successful in repaying. What is your secret? What advice do you have for others?
I think it is because people don't have business skills.
I was born into a family that ran a small business.
I can also manufacture one of the items that I sell, which is ogiri.
Thus, people should learn skills to help them to know how to run a business.
I am always prudent and skilled in allocating my resources. I find items that sell quickly.
So, what is your message to Develop Africa, Global Giving and partners?
I am continually thanking them for everything that they have done and are doing.
I really praise them as one would praise God.
Because of the way that they have helped me,
I am able to feed and support my grand children.
They have increased my finance, which puts the business in a much better place.
I pray that God will give me strength to continue.
Just last November 14th, I turned 72 years old.
I pray also for them so God will continue to bless them. I pray that God will keep us all.
Well, we also thank you, and pray you continue in strength
