Hi, my name is Gary Mitnik. I'm a sculptor here in Sedona, Arizona and I'm here on behalf
of Expert Village. Americans didn't call him Kokopelli. They had many different names for
this guy. "The Ancient One" and several others, but we know him as Kokopelli, and that's what
his name is to us. And who knows if he actually lived or not. I don't know. A lot of this
is experimentation too. Like I was trying to figure out how he would look with an extra
ponytail up there so I just take a rough piece of clay, and maybe stick it up there, step
back and take a look and see how it looks with a little bit of an extra tail on his
hair. I don't know if that works or not. I think it's a little too big. So we'll cut
it down a bit. Still too big. This might not work at all. But it's fun to try little things like this.
See, that's another thing, you don't want to get too much detail in one place. You don't
want the eye to go exactly to the hair. So maybe that was a little too much up there.
We want the eye to kind of flow with the whole piece. We want the eye to be comfortable looking
at the whole piece, and if your eye is distracted, in any way, like I found out this little extra
piece of hair does distract away from it, somewhat. It's probably best not to put it
on there. That's what experimenting with clay is all about. And then of course you can just
smooth it over, can't make a mistake. Clay is a very forgiving medium to work with. Anything
you do wrong you can always fix.
