Blending Vector Art - Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop Welcome back to another episode of creatnprocess.
Today we will be creating a Blending Vector art. Creating two design, each with different
techniques. We will be using pen tool to draw the curves, Blend tool to add the effects
and Gradient tool to add colours. So lets begin with the tutorial.
Open a new illustrator Artboard. Select the pen tool, remove the fill colour and keep
the stroke colour black. Now draw out wavy curve line, make it smooth and scale it down.
In the same way draw out another curves with different structure. We will make this littles
bit smaller. Now select both the curves using selection tool, then select the blend tool.
Click on the top left corner of the curve and then click on the bottom left corner when
the plus sign shows. This will create blending objects between the two curves. To increase
the number of steps, double click on the blend tool icon. A panel will open. Here set the
spacing to specified steps, then increase the number of steps. Set the numbers and check
out with different values. For this lets give 106 steps and click ok. Now place the design
aside. Lets draw out a curve using the pen tool. This curve will be use to give a specific
path to the design. You can see, the blending between the two curves are straight , so to
give some dynamic look, we will use this curve. Adjust the curve as per your desired look.
After that select all and go to Object > Blend > Replace spline. The curve will act as a
spline for the blends. you can edit the spline by double clicking and adjusting the curve
using direct selection tool. Do the changes in the blending path to get better flow. Edit
each curve if it is necessary. After everything is set, lets increase the steps to 181. Add
a background with dark blue colour. Set the design to top. change the stroke thickness
to 0.5 pt and the stroke colour to white. There are some irregularity in the blend.
So, lets edit the spline little more. Make all the spacing even to get a nice look. After
this select the top curve and add a gradient colour to the stroke. Double click on the
left gradient slides and select pink colour. Add a little red tone and fade it a little.
In the same way add a colour on the right gradient slider with the same colour. Then
select the bottom curve and apply the gradient with the same values. To give some interesting
effect, lets change the top curve gradient to blue colour. Apply it to both the sliders.
Now you can see a nice colour transition from blue to faded pink. To add more details, decrease
the stroke thickness to o.25 pt & increase the steps to around 271. We got more highlight
and effects. to do more adjustment, let drag this design to photoshop. Scale it down and
add a brightness & contract adjustment layer. Increase the contrast value to around 28 and
the brightness value around 22. This will add a glossy highlight effect. And if you
switch off the effect, you can see the difference. You can do more colour variation using the
hue & saturation adjustment layer. Check out with different colour shades. Finally our
first design of blending vector art is done. This was the first technique to create such
designs. Lets use our second technique to create another
design. For the second design, we will start out with pen tool and draw out curve with
white stroke colour. Make a wavy curve in circular path with the end points finishing
close to each other. Adjust the curve using direct selection tool. Use handles to adjust
the directions. Create one more wavy curve lines, but this time it is overlapping to
each other. After this adjust each vertices manually. Then select both the curves and
apply the blending shapes using the same method. Click the top left point and then the other
point. We will get 1 steps by default. Keep it like this. We will use the middle curve
to give different direction and to add unique shape, which was not possible with the previous
method. So first of all, select the design and go to Object > Expand. Then right click
& Ungroup it. This will separate out each curves. You can select the middle curve and
do the changes. Adjust the curve to add different flow to the blend. Adjust the vertices to
give different pattern in between. Also make sure that there are no sharp corners. Everything
should be smooth. You can experiment with different shapes and come up with different
designs. After completing the adjustments, select all the 3 curves, and using the Blend
tool. First click on the top curve left point then the mid curve left point & finally the
bottom curve right point. Then increase the steps to around 75 and stroke thickness to
0.25 pt. Now lets do adjustment with the individual curves. Increase the steps to 182. Add gradient
colour to the top stroke. Give blue colour to the left gradient slider and the faded
pink to the right gradient slider. then change the rotation angle to -90 degree. This will
keep blue colour to top & the faded pink on bottom. Now select the mid curve & apply the
same gradient colour. And then the bottom curve and apply faded pink to both the slider.
After that double click outside. we will reduce the stroke thickness to 0.1 pt and adjust
the curves. Drag & drop to Photoshop. Add brightness & contrast adjustment layer and
adjust the values to add more highlight and details to the design.
Finally our second design is ready. We have used very simple techniques, to create out
this blending vector art. We will go further to add nice font and to do the final refinement.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial. Don’t forget to check out the next tutorial coming up.
