The United Nations Security Council met Thursday
to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
The meeting focused on the need for peace and security
as the country moves towards
increased responsibility in running its own affairs.
Staffan De Mistura, Special Representative of the Secretary General
to the UN's mission to Afghanistan, UNAMA
"The primary focus forthcoming months will be
on transition of the security arrangements
as international forces begin the gradual transition
and in the lead responsibility for the security of the Afghan security forces. "
During the transition, which has been dubbed the "Kabul Process",
the United Nations will provide support in areas
such as local mediation and conflict resolution,
as well as technical assistance and the monitoring of human rights.

"As we come together to discuss the situation in Afghanistan,
the country embarks on transition to full Afghan sovereignty,
national ownership and leadership in an effort to realize
the noble vision of a secure, democratic and prosperous nation.
One that is able to meet the needs of its citizens independently.
"The role of the International community in supporting the transition
will remain essential for our success."
