So yes,
they fooled me again and here I am,
and a first episode is always complicated.
Where to start? I turn to my Puente Aéreo notebook.
And I review my ideas.
Among all, one shines trough.
A word I wrote sometime, for some reason.
Values.
And I thought it was a good way for starting the fourth season
of this modest audiovisual encyclopedia
about hip hop.
So
welcome
to Puente Aéreo.
Values
Since we are children we are taught we have to face life with values.
With the positive, we assume!
What happens is that many times, our educational system
does not completely fit with our way of learning
and we end up getting those values from our family relationships, TV, friends, etc.
Thoughout the years I've also seen as hip hop culture
and the fact of practicing it or feeling part of if,
has also added values to that list that condition our social behaviour,
even our way of understanding life.
It is said that this movement is the voice born from the urban youth with depleted social rights.
It is also understood that it has a solid political language
as the social movement that it is.
What it is clear is that one of the first things you learn when you want to be a part of this
has to do with the values.
I could name many.
But I'm going to highlight those which, in my opinion, are more relevant.
Maybe I should start with self affirmation. Identity. Self confidence.
He/she who practices any element of hip hop, shines with it.
He/she is reaffirmed in their true self.
The dancer shines when he/she dances.
The graffiti writer changes his/her environment.
Improves it, with his/her plastic expression.
Their own.
The musician expresses, complaints, explains ho he/she is trough musical language,
the lyrics, production.
The DJs's musical selection has a similar effect.
Another great value could be respect.
We soon learn to respect he/she who is better than us.
He/she who we admire and imitate.
And with the years that value extends to all those who admire us for what we do.
Therefore we should end up respecting everybody... Of course.
Respect is a value with which is possible to understand life.
And one that actual urban society does not usually promote too much,
and that's why I believe hip hop is so much valuable in that sense.
Another to highlight is the concept of discipline.
Many of you know how hard it is to get ahead and keep active in any artistic branch
of this cultural movement.
Perseverance and belief in self are basic to be able to do anything here,
but discipline is a code of conduct that is acquired in time without us noticing.
We work periodically in something by pure pleasure,
but in reality we are training a very specific development mode.
We are generating discipline.
This value is tried to be inculcated by force at school,
with subjects or situations that we are not interested in.
However in the family of hip hop I've seen examples,
almost surreal, and that the parents or teachers of those to discipline,
would never imagine they were applicable.
With this little consideration I wanted to show that to be focused on something creative
that is shared with many others,
makes us grow, evolve in our personal areas,
in our personality and the emotional intelligence.
The cultural movement of hip hop provides many other values.
For example:
The intuition of teaching and transmitting knowledge.
The desire to learn the history and origin of the things we are interested in.
The ability to create, sharing with others,
to generate artistic works in group.
Even a strong sense of justice, due, probably, to the socially unjust environment
where this cultural phenomenon was born.
Anybody who is into this, in reality, can stop and think, and discover, about how many positive values he/she has acquired,
thanks to swim, in this inmense sea.
