Pentek WS-20 Softening Filter Hey everyone, Tony the Filter Doctor here.
Today we’re looking at the Pentek WS-20. This is an industry standard size cartridge,
approximately 20 inches long by 2 ½ inches in diameter, which means it’s going to fit
into a vast selection of industry standard size filter housings, like for example the
one that you see here. Now, the WS-20 is a cation resin water softening
filter. It has a capacity of approximately 1,500 grains, which is about 25,650 parts
per million. Now the reason I give you that information is so that you don’t get too
excited if you are a residential homeowner and you think, “Great I can install this
in my whole house filter housing and soften my water.” Unfortunately that would not
be an economical choice. This cartridge is fairly expensive and if you had 300 parts
per million of total dissolved solids in your water; you would get 85 gallons of water from
this cartridge. Obviously that’s not an efficient choice.
This is more of a specialty cartridge; it’s designed for laboratory settings where only
a small volume of water is needed or some commercial and industrial applications. But,
it could be used say for example, in a residential setting if you were creating soft water for
a very specific low volume application. Let’s say you have a humidifier; if you put mineralized
water, regular water into your humidifier you’re going to create scale and it’s
going to be *** the humidifier and in some cases you’ll get a mineral dust that
lands on everything throughout the home. But if you use a water softening cartridge you
can feed softened water into your humidifier and reduce wear and tear on that appliance
and eliminate that nasty mineral dust that gets all over your nice things.
So that’s one example of a small low volume application that might find benefit from the
WS-20. And of course there are many other ways in which soft water in low quantities,
small quantities is useful. Again, this is the WS-20 from Pentek, and
I’m your host Tony the Filter Doctor. Thanks for watching.
