A crossword puzzle is a puzzle for word lovers. They started many years ago, in 1913, and
they have a grid, usually these days it's a rectangular or square grid and the original
crossword puzzle that was written in1913, it was in a diagonal shape, a diamond shape.
And over, over the years the puzzles have changed in format, different types of puzzles
have been written. They are sets of clues which fit into words, clues to words that
fit into the grid, and the clues can be anything from a definition to a quotation with a fill
in the blank to one of those cryptic clues, which are for, to my mind much more interesting
than the regular definition clues. Clues, the crossword puzzles started in the United
States and was in fact the, the first crossword puzzle book in 1924 was published by Simon
& Schuster. It was their first book. They were a little worried about whether it was
rather a too low brow a subject for a book of what they wanted to become a reputable
publishing company. But, it was a smash hit and got them going into a major publishing
house.
