The EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.
Since 2006, the European Union has been supporting the social and economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community,
including the improvement of the economic conditions and quality of life in rural areas.
Out of the total amount of €320.5 million allocated to the Turkish Cypriot community to date,
over €30 million was dedicated to the Rural Development Sector Programme.
This is the story of one of the beneficiaries of the EU funded support in Angolemi / Angolem / Taşpınar.
We're a family that make a living solely from farming.
We produce products from both greenhouses and fields.
We thought we used to have a greenhouse but we realised that it was a very simple one.
Thanks to the grants, we had much more advantages.
With my own resources I could build a 1000m² greenhouse
but with the EU grant I built a 5000m² greenhouse.
The gutter height of this greenhouse we built with the grant is 3 metres.
So it is more resistant to plant diseases.
It has better air circulation and has doubled our production.
For instance, with the old greenhouses, we used to produce 15 tonnes,
sometimes 20 tonnes of product per 1000m².
With the new greenhouse, we have increased production to 30 tonnes.
During the course of our project, the EU also
provided seminars on plant diseases and crop production.
As we are trained from the cradle, we thought we had enough knowledge
but during these seminars we realised it was not enough.
So we grew better quality, healthier products.
I want to thank EU countries
and all the EU-funded rural development experts here in Cyprus for their support.
