First time I met Ed would have been at a National Council on Independent Living Conference in
Washington, DC. And in fact I met his PCA, his traveling aid first, a guy named Mike.
And I can recall this tall, long-haired California lookin guy, and for some reason we struck
up a conversation and he introduced me to Ed. Now I knew about Ed and knew his name
and stuff many times ‘cause this was in the mid-80’s, but had never had a chance
to meet with him, and ended up going out to dinner with Ed that night, along with Ed’s
entourage or group that always seemed to be around Ed. ‘Cause Ed seemed to know everybody
so it was just a real interesting collection of people. And, you know, Ed and I struck
up a friendship. I wouldn’t say that I saw him a lot or anything like that, but he was
just a very powerful, meaningful person to know. You could feel that right from the beginning.
