Floods sweep Eastern Europe. As rains continue across the region, large areas of Ukraine
and Moldova have been stricken by heavy floods, forcing thousands from their homes as the
Prut River overflowed. Some 3,500 people have been affected in western Ukraine, where over
1,000 homes in the Chernivtsy and Ivano-Frankivsk regions were inundated and 2,000 hectares
of agricultural land, along with roads, bridges, schools, and wells have been damaged. Floodwaters
from the swollen Prut also deluged five villages in western Moldova, causing one casualty with
another still missing. Over 2,000 people were evacuated when 300 homes were destroyed. As
local officials work on rescue and recovery operations, Red Cross Society personnel are
rendering aid to the affected, particularly those who have been evacuated. In Ukraine,
First Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev said that repairs would begin immediately,
while neighbors such as Russia have already begun providing humanitarian aid. Acting Moldovan
President Mihai Ghimpu also pledged the government’s best efforts in providing both financial assistance
and a rebuilding of homes for the affected residents.
Our appreciation, Your Excellencies, Russia, Red Cross Society and other relief personnel,
for your prompt endeavors to ease the flood situations. Wishing everyone a smooth resuming
of the regularity of daily life as such severities are alleviated through humanity’s kinder
regard for the environment
