There are over three million books in Hodges library, so finding a book can feel a
bit overwhelming.
But if you break the process down into steps it's really quite manageable.
First, let's go to the workers whom page go to www.lib.utk.edu
The library catalog
is called books plus, which simply means the catalog
contains books as well as material such as maps and videos.
Now into the Search box on the home page enter your search.
You can search by subject, title, author,
or using the drop down menu under the search box you can change the type of
materials you are searching for.
Once the catalog has returned search results you can refine results if needed.
You can do this by using the refine results options on the left side of the page.
In this example, I'm refining my results so I'm only shown books in Hodges
library.
The book I am interested in is called Engineering Design for Wear.
To see more about this book, click on its title. I am taken to the Details tab,
which shows me the book's author, year of publication, edition and various
other info.
Now, find and select the Items tab located at the right of the blue Details .
The information displayed on this screen includes the library where the material is located,
in this case Hodges library,
and the call number.
You can think about this as the book's address.
The call number for our material is TA418.B393
This is the number you will need to write down as it will help you find
the material you need.
Although the call number may look complicated, it's really easy to
understand once you break it down into smaller parts.
Let's start with the first letter or letters of the call number, in this case TA.
This tells us what floor the book is located on.
Near the top of the Items tab you will see call numbers and maps. Click on this link.
Here you find a list of the floors in the library. The book we are looking for
begins with the letters TA, so keep scrolling through floors until you find the Ts.
On the sixth floor is where materials that are in the T call number range are located.
The next step is to go to the sixth floor.
If you are still having difficulty locating the right book, don't forget that
librarians are always available to help.
You can use the Ask Us Now chatbox libraries home page, stop by the
library's reference desk, common
or come by the circulation desk for additional assistance.
