Hi, I'm Jordan Cadrin. Director at Cadrin Capital Ventures Incorporated, member of the
small publishers, artists, and writers network, as well as the association of writers and
writing programs.
I put this presentation together, to drive home my point that 2013 is the year of the
self-publisher due to a technological revolution that is rocking the publishing industry
The publishing industry is transforming. Before the technological revolution, writers could
not reach their audience without a publisher. This is no longer the case. The successful
author no longer needs to be tied to a publisher. Publishing deals come with strings. You are
likely, as a new author, to be much better off on your own. Statistics show that the
eBook trend is on the rise, as titles are beginning to sell a much higher percentage
of eBook sales vs print sales even compared to four years ago. A MUCH higher percentage.
Some titles are seeing 50X more eBook sales in 2013 than they were in 2009.
You do not need a publisher to handle the key functions that they provide like editing
and marketing, you can do it yourself (fairly easily), or have it done for you on the internet
for much less than a publisher would charge you. Publishers were once "gate-keepers,"
the key to distribution. Now they are simply a means of slowing the process down while
taking most of the profits.
It's amazing: for most of the history of publishing, a writer couldn't do much to promote their
work, due to the old ball and chain. Then the technological revolution happened, and
wrtiers began to have to go a copious amount of online promotion in order to stay competitive.
Writers were doing most of this work, while still cutting in the publishing house an at
outrageous percentage for each book sold. Then Amazon came along, and for the same amount
of work, authors could retain a much higher percentage of each book sold, as well as having
much more control over the project from start to finish.
Marketing is a hurdle that many authors don't feel they can jump, but by following the right
methods, as I will show you, this is now one of the easiest parts of the process. Publishers
are letting authors down on the marketing aspect, especially online. With or without
a publishing deal, it really is up to the author to promote their book, but without
a deal, you don't have to do all the work while cutting someone else in.
As any economist will tell you, those who prosper the most, are those who are able to
accept and implement improved technologies in the most efficient way. The traditional
publishing industry has reached the constraints of its technology, of it's delivery system.
Now is the time to jump on to this technology early, just like those who benefitted from
an early entry into the .com bubble. Digital books are simply are a faster, more cost-effective
delivery system of information than traditional paper-based means.
Not being tied to a publisher does incredible things for an author. When you self-publish
your eBooks, you get to sell them at a way lower price than traditional publishers can
afford to sell their titles at. So, you make more money, because your only costs are your
time (or money) in creating (or having someone else create) the eBook, and having the cover
art created (which can be done for free, $5, or more). You also get a much higher royalty
payment (70% the majort of the time). Leveraging your low-cost high-yield position as a self-publisher,
you can reap the rewards of today's technology in a way that mos people never even consider.
Digital publishing is an incredible thing for new authors. Readers are more inclined
to purchase your books, as a new, unknown to them authors, because your book prices
are cheaper. This low price, resulting in higher sales, results in higher revenue in
an incredibly scale-able model. This is the arsenal every author wants on the battlefield.
Even traditional authors are abandoning traditional publishing deals because they can make more
money on their own.
eBooks are a much better means of distribution for authors compared to print means. The earning
potential on your eBook is indefinite. It can remain online forever with little maintenance,
and essentially no costs. On the other hand, with traditional paper publishing, there is
a motivated upfront sales campaign, which is followed by the disappearance of sales
of years of low backlist sales. Sound fun? No. Digital is the obvious way to go. The
back end is what ultimately counts. Digital is the ultimate winner in this category.
Having your book on a digital shelf, instead of a physical shelf, is also highly beneficial
because bookstores have a limited amount of space. Often your book would be hard to find
in the sea of books in a bookstore. But a virtual shelf, carries more titles than any
bookstore ever could, 24 hours a day. You also are not competeing with the major authors
who get displayers in the store and take up the majority of the shelf-spaces, while your
book is literally pushed to the side, spine out.
Another thing, virtual shelf life is indefinite; eBooks are forever. Once they are published
online, they have the potential to sell for decades. You could pit your grand-children
through University long after your gone just from putting an eBook up on the internet.
Statistical and factual information:
Amazon, the worlds largest online retailer, currently sells more digital books than printed
books. quote
Barry Eisler, the best-selling novelist of multiple thriller-series, has turned away
from traditional publishing and followed the technological revolution with the self-publishing
movement. He recently made news by walking away from a $500 000 publishing deal in favor
of self-publishing his work. Quote
Here's some statistics from New York Times best-selling author Tim Ferris's blog:
The end of the publishing era is remnant of the end of the golden age of television, or
the end of the railroad empire on transporting goods when they introduced interstate highways.
It was fun while it lasted, and the big players will try to hold on for as long as they can,
but ultimately, new technology triumphs.
Low cost books:
If you self-publish at a low price, you are much more likely to get a high-sales volume
AND you get the books to market, much sooner than if you go through the traditional publishing
process, which delays the time form creation to publishing significantly. If you wrote
something people are searching for right now, but it takes 2 years to get published, all
your work may be moot.
What's next / the future: Let's use Konrath as an example for what the
author of the future, and for a lucky few today, will look like. His books run $2.99,
but he sells 2-3 thousand copies per month at that price. That means, with his 70% in
royalties, he makes between $4186 and $6279 per month from ONE EBOOK.
"zacsmith" on the warrior forums put his title onto Kindle and Createspace, and were contacted
by a South-Korea literary agency on behalf of a Korean publisher, for the Korean-language
rights to two of his titles. It's a traditional publishing deal, in another country, in another
language, just because he self-published those titles. Talk about easy money.
Why Amazon / Why eBooks: You need to take advantage of the digital
self-publishing opportunities that are screaming at each and every one of us this year and
write an eBook: Selling eBooks is the end of you exchanging
time for money. Your earning potential becomes unlimited because it is no longer attached
to a finite resource: time"
"eBooks are an incredible way to create multiple streams of income; each new eBook is an additional
income stream." "You can access a huge global market by publishing
on Amazons Kindle." ( "You add more value to peoples lives by giving
them highly valuable information and the solution to their problems."
"As an author, adopting the latest technologies gives you massive leverage. You can leverage
the Internet by using affiliates, online ads, etc. You can recruit a trove of affiliates
to sell an eBook for you. You get to leverage your knowledge, and sell it to people all
around the world. "It costs practically nothing to set up. eBooks
have very low start-up costs, which means there is essentially no risk to the author.
"You can work from home, a coffee shop, the beach.. it's up to you now."
"This is a business with a lot of automation options to reduce your time spent logged in
front of the computer.." "You don't have to worry about handling expensive
inventory, nor must you worry about packing, shipping, and postage."
"An eBook gives you the chance to establish yourself as an expert in your niche."
It's fast! You can create and start selling an eBook much faster than you would think.."
"Minimum skill is required. And you can start part-time if you wish."
No publisher can offer a deal for authors that is as good as the deal offered by Amazon.
A 70% royalty on each book sold was unheard of until now.

Amazon terrifies Google: Amazon is extending its ad-serving technology
beyond its own sites and, in the process, competing with the likes of Google, Yahoo,
Facebook, and Microsoft. Unlike those entrenched rivals, Amazon has
the sort of consumer data over which certain advertisers drool. The company, with 209 million
customers who shopped on the site last 12 months, has nearly two decades worth of shopping
data. It doesn't just know what you're searching for on the Web. Amazon has a detailed history
of what you bought, when you bought it, and how you paid for it.
It's called "intent" data -- and marketers can't wait to get their hands on it."
"Google is stealthily preparing to launch an Amazon Prime competitor called "Google
Shopping Express." According to one source the service will be $10 or $15 cheaper than
Amazon Prime, so $69 or $64 a year and offer same-day delivery from brick-and-mortar stores
like Target, Walmart, Walgreens and Safeway. When and if it launches, the product will
be a major competitor to Amazon Prime. Amazon pays 70% of revenue to authors that
sell under $10 (which is HIGHLY recommended). There are over well over 100 million Kindle
devices active, The Kindle is easy to use and portable, thus
it's popularity. It also gives users what they want -- instrant gratification -- in
the form of instant downloads. It is clear that this technology, is what readers want,
