One of the biggest draws at the Cannes International Film Festival are the stars and all that bling
they wear, much of which is borrowed. (Picture courtesy Wikimedia Commons / Georges Biard)
Which makes the latest headline an interesting one for the famed annual film festival:
VIA ABC: "A major jewelry heist at the Cannes film festival. More than a million dollars
of jewels have been stolen from a hotel."
French police say the jewels were taken from a security box in the room of a Chopard employee.
Obviously not the best news for the Swiss luxury jeweller, since designers use the festival's
red carpet as a showcase for their pieces. (Via YouTube / fashiontv)
Chopard, in fact, has been one of the festival's sponsors for more than 15 years.
The company even designed the award presented for best film.
There aren't many more details about the reported $1 million theft, and Chopard isn't commenting.
But for perspective, the BBC's Hugh Schofield points out while the value sounds like a lot...
VIA BBC: "One set of earrings or one watch can easily be worth more than $1 million,
so it might not be that much."
No word on whether police have any suspects.
